On [[1867]]/12/9, the 15-year-old [[Meiji Emperor]] issued a formal edict (''dai-gô-rei'') declaring the restoration (''fukko'') of Imperial rule (''ôsei'').
Battles continued to rage, however, between opponents of the [[Tokugawa shogunate]] and its supporters, for much of the rest of the year. In addition, the emperor's formal coronation did not take place until 8/27.
