Kôdai-in was the chief wife of [[Shogun]] [[Tokugawa Ienari]].
She was the daughter of [[Shimazu Shigehide]], lord of [[Satsuma han]]. In [[1776]], at the age of 4, she was engaged to Matsudaira Toyochiyo of the [[Hitotsubashi family]], who would later become Tokugawa Ienari; they were married in [[1789]]. She gave birth to her first child, Atsunosuke, in [[1797]], but he died when he was only age 4.
In [[1842]], she was promoted to [[court ranks|Junior First Rank (従一位)]]. She died two years later at age 72.
