Tomonao originally held [[Matsuyama castle]] in [[Musashi province]] for the Ogigayatsu-Uesugi, then went over to the Hôjô when the fortunes of the Uesugi declined. Despite his advanced age, Tomonao, an able warrior, was active in the [[1569]] fighting with the [[Takeda clan (Kai)|Takeda]]. He was succeeded by a son of [[Uesugi Ujinori]].
