Tradition states that the [[Ichiden Ryu]] lineage begins with Marume Mondonosho Norikichi <ref>丸目主水正則吉. His Zokumyo is given as Sannosuke, 三之助</ref>, a man from Usui in Joshu. His student, Kuniie Yauemon <ref>国家弥右衛門, credited with [[Kageyama Shinto(?) Ryu]] (影山真刀流)</ref> taught [[Asayama Ichidensai Shigetatsu]], founder of Asayama Ichiden Ryu. [[Asayama Ichidensai Shigetatsu|Ichidensai]] then spread his tradition across the country. However, the records for Marume are unclear.
Another tradition claims that he learned from a variety of teachers, including [[Kamiizumi Hidetsuna]], [[Okuyama Tadanobu|Okuyama Saemondayu Tadanobu]]<ref>奥山左衛門大夫忠信. A student of [[Taisha Ryu|Taisha Ryu's]] [[Marume Kurando]]</ref>, Nakamura Senjuro<ref>A follower of [[Kamiizumi Hidetsuna]]</ref>, as well as with the Yoshioka family in the capital. There is also some thought there may be a connection with Tamiya Ryu.
[[Asayama Ichidensai Shigetatsu|Ichidensai]] died on the 5th day of the first month of the 4th year of Joko (1687) at the age of 78. He had numerous students, and many other schools eventually spawned off of the main branches.
