The book 血誠新撰組-峻烈壬生浪士忠と斬 says that when Ibaraki tried to leave the Shinsengumi he was killed (新撰組の大石鍬次郎らに斬殺された). But it goes on to say that his grave states that he committed suicide. Generally it is believed that Ibaraki,Sano,Tomikawa,Nakamura, those 4 members committed Seppuku together in the Aizu han residence.

But some sources say they were killed by several Shinsengumi members include Oishi.
