Photograph of a building of the Enryaku-ji complex on Mt. Hiei.

The Enryaku-Ji Temple located on Mt. Hiei in Omi Province was founded by the founder of the Tendai Lotus sect of Buddhism, Saichô, in 805. The complex on Mt. Hiei grew steadily in power and influence until it was attacked and destroyed by Oda Nobunaga on 1571/9/12 because of it's support of the Asai clan.
