Baisaô was an itinerant monk, known for his poetry and calligraphy, and as one of the chief proponents of the ''[[sencha]]'' [[tea ceremony]], which was quickly adopted by many Sinophile [[literati]], who saw it as an ideal informal, cultured way to share tea with one another in a Chinese manner. His pseudonym, Baisaô, literally means "old man who sells tea."
