An electric andon-style lamp at a historic home in Sakura, Chiba prefecture
  • Japanese: 行燈・行灯 (andon)

Andon are a traditional style of Japanese lantern, made of a wooden, bamboo, or metal frame and lined with paper. Though the form originally emerged in the Kamakura period as a handheld style of lantern, by the Edo period it was the most standard form of lighting fixture used indoors; various types of andon were designed to be hung from pillars or walls or to be placed on floors or furniture.
