- The Hongzhi Emperor takes the throne in China.
- Between 100,000 and 200,000 religious monto revolt in Kaga province and drive out the ruling samurai (the shugo/daimyô Togashi Masachika), establishing that province as a 'Province held by farmers' (Hyakushô mochi no kuni).
- Ashikaga Yoshihisa takes the field against Rokkaku Takayori of Omi province but dies on campaign. He is succeded by Ashikaga Yoshitane.
