Timeline of 1685
- 1685/1 Itowappu system of controlling the trade in silk is revived.
- 1685/6 The Portuguese ship São Paulo arrives in Nagasaki harbor. The Portuguese repatriate 12 Japanese, and leave roughly two months later without incident. This is the last time during the Edo period that the Portuguese attempt to re-establish relations.
- 1685/7 The Qing Court, in need of precious metals, sends 13 ships from Fuzhou and Xiamen to Japan, seeking to exchange Taiwanese sugar for Japanese copper.
Other Events
- Restrictions are placed on the export of silver; trade with Chinese merchants is not to exceed 6000 kan of silver, and with Dutch merchants, 3000 kan. Many ships are turned away from Nagasaki. Restrictions are also asked of Tsushima han and Satsuma han.
- Shogunate bans the establishment of new Buddhist or Shinto festivals or rites, and of new Shinto shrines.
- The shogunate standardizes calendars across the realm, requiring the use of the standard shogunate-approved calendar.
