A stone lantern originally commissioned in 1652, by Nobuteru, in honor of the Tokugawa clan. It bears the Tokugawa family crest. Given to the City of New York by Tokyo's Taitô Ward in 1980, the lantern now stands in the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens.[1]
Naitô Nobuteru was the son of Naitô Nobumasa, and first Edo period Naitô clan daimyô of Tanagura han in Mutsu province.
Born in 1592, he became lord of Tanagura in 1627, with a kokudaka of 50,000 koku. He was known for his interest in tea ceremony and devotion to the nenbutsu.
