Nanbu Shigenao was a son of Nanbu Toshinao, and lord of the 130,000 koku domain of Morioka.

He was predeceased by both his son (in 1651), and his adopted son Nanbu Katsunao (third son of Hotta Masamori), in 1659. As a result, he was succeeded as daimyô by his younger brother Nanbu Shigenobu.
