- Japanese: 円明流
- Type: Kenjutsu
- Founder: Miyamoto Musashi (宮本武蔵)
- Date: early 1600s
History
There is a document from the 10th year of Keicho (1605) that documents and Enmei Ryu to a Miyamoto Yoshigaru (宮本義軽), but it is unclear if this is the same as Miyamoto Musashi. It does appear that Musashi was using this name for his style of swordsmanship prior to the early Kan'ei era (1624-1644). He eventually changed the name to Niten Ichi Ryu. It can also be found under the name Enmei Niten Ryu.
Lineage
The lineage given in Bugei Ryuha Daijiten begins with Musashi's father, Miyamoto Munisai, and his style of jittejutsu. It is unclear how much his father actually would have been able to pass down to him, however. Those names in italics retain some question as to whether or not they learned Enmei Ryu (which isn't to say they might not have learned it under the later name, Niten Ichi Ryu)
