Masatsugu was the son of Hajikano Gengorô Tadatsugu (killed at Fourth Kawanakajima in 1561). He was famed for testing the depth of the Sasao River during Shingen's advance on Odawara in 1569 by fearlessly riding into the waters himself. He fought at the Battle of Nagashino in 1575 and survived the fall of the Takeda in 1582 to die of illness in 1624, perhaps the last of the famous Takeda retainers to die.
