The Chenghua Emperor was the ninth emperor of China's Ming Dynasty. His reign saw a revival of Ming military strength, following the Mongol capture of the Ming emperor Zhengtong a few decades earlier; the Great Wall was strengthened and extended by an additional six hundred miles during the Chenghua reign, and much of what survives of the Wall today dates back to this construction effort.
