  • 1685/1 Itowappu system of controlling the trade in silk is revived.
  • 1685/6 The Portuguese ship São Paulo arrives in Nagasaki harbor. The Portuguese repatriate 12 Japanese, and leave roughly two months later without incident.
  • 1685/7 The Qing Court, in need of precious metals, sends 13 ships from Fuzhou and Xiamen to Japan, seeking to exchange Taiwanese sugar for Japanese copper.
