Akishige was a retainer of the Uesugi clan and served under the command of Saitô Tomonobu. At the Fourth Battle of Kawanakajima (1561) Akishige fought gallantly and bested a Takeda hero named Yasuma Hiroshige in one-on-one combat. He was personally rewarded afterwards by Uesugi Kenshin.
