- Rama I founds the Chakri Dynasty in Siam, which continues to rule today.
- The Great Tenmei Famine begins (lasts until 1787).
- Tsutaya Jûzaburô purchases exclusive rights to publish Yoshiwara saiken (courtesan directories), and moves his residence and shop from the Yoshiwara to the Nihonbashi area.
- The first ukiyo-e print by Utamaro to be published by Tsutaya Jûzaburô is published.
