The Yungang Caves or Yungang Grottoes are a set of ancient Buddhist cave temples near Datong in Shanxi province, China. One of the five largest Buddhist cave complexes in China, they are today recognized as a World Heritage Site.
Dating to the late 5th century, the caves were originally established by the priest-monk Tan-yao at the request of Emperor Wencheng of Northern Wei.
