Yoshii Tomozane was a prominent figure in the Sat-Chô Alliance and the sonnô jôi movement to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate in the 1860s.

Yoshii was a close friend of both Saigô Takamori and Ôkubo Toshimichi since they were young. In the 1860s, Yoshii became a central figure in the Seichûgumi, developed connections with Sakamoto Ryôma, and participated in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi.

Following the Meiji Restoration, Yoshii served in a number of government positions, including as a member of the first Privy Council,[1] first Vice-Minister of the Imperial Household Ministry, and president of the Nippon Railway Company.
