Yamato Colony

Jump to navigationJump to searchThe Yamato Colony was one of a number of early Japanese(-American) settlements in the United States. Located in Livingston, California, in the San Joaquin Valley, the community was one of three Japanese Christian utopian communities begun by newspaper publisher Abiko Kyutarô.
Abiko expressed beliefs that Japanese would be more accepted in the United States if they showed their true intention to settle there, by buying land. Beginning in 1906, he divided up his over 3000 acres in the valley into 40-acre parcels, and sold them to Japanese immigrants. In 1918, he began a similar colony in Cressey, CA, and some years later, in Cortez.
