One of the reconstructed yagura (towers) at Utsunomiya castle.

A fortification was first built at Utsunomiya in the late Heian period. An early modern castle was then built on the site in the early Edo period, with Honda Masazumi becoming lord of the castle in 1619.

The castle grounds extended roughly 900 meters north to south, and roughly 850 meters east to west.
