The area was given to the Kishû Tokugawa clan after the [[Great Meireki Fire]] of [[1657]]. It remained in use as the chief Edo residence of the Kishû Tokugawa throughout the Edo period, and was the birthplace of the 14th shogun, [[Tokugawa Iemochi]].
