The Tamazato mansion was a secondary residence in [[Kagoshima]] used by several prominent members of the [[Shimazu clan]] in the late 19th century.
Originally built by [[Shimazu Narioki]], it became the primary retirement residence of [[Shimazu Hisamitsu]] in the late 1870s. Upon Hisamitsu's death in [[1887]], a new road was constructed connecting the Kuromon ("Black Gate") of the mansion's grounds to the main National Road, for the purposes of his funeral procession; this road came to be known as "State Funeral Road" (''kokusô dôro'').
