Yasuda Motohisa was born in Hiroshima prefecture, in Hiroshima city. He graduated Tokyo University with a degree in Japanese history in 1947. After assisting at Tokyo University, he transferred to Hokkaido University where he became an assistant professor of literature. He became a professor of literature at Gakushu-in University in Tokyo in 1963. He later served as the university president from 1985-1989.
