Shingaku (lit. "heart learning") is a religion founded by Ishida Baigan (1685-1744), a Kyoto-based merchant.
The teachings of Shingaku combine elements of Shinto, Buddhism and Confucianism into a set of philosophies particularly well-suited to providing a system of ethics for merchants and artisans, who are encouraged to be devoted to their work, frugal, and honest.
