Monzenmachi

• Japanese: 門前町 (monzenmachi)

Monzenmachi, or, literally "gate-front towns," were towns and cities which grew up around major Buddhist and Shintô sites, especially in the Edo period. The term stands in contrast to jôkamachi, or castle towns.
