Jean-François de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse, was a French naval officer who explored waters around Japan circa 1787. The Sôya Strait separating Hokkaido and Sakhalin and connecting the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk is sometimes known today as the La Pérouse Strait, after him.

La Pérouse's voyages in 1787 included passing from the Sea of Japan into the Sea of Okhotsk through the strait now named for him,[1] and later that same year running aground on a reef in the Yaeyama Islands.
