Tani Bunchô was a prominent [[bunjinga|literati painter]] of the mid-[[Edo period]].
Bunchô's works also include a reproduction of a pair of paintings by Willem Hendrik van Royen; housed at the [[Gohyaku Rakan-ji]] in Edo, these were the only European paintings visible in the city for much of the period.
