Shimazu Hisamoto was lord of Sadowara han in Hyûga province, and served as a sort of regent watching over Shimazu Shigehide, daimyô of Satsuma han, until the latter was of age.

Hisamoto accompanied the young daimyô to Edo on a number of occasions, most notably in 1764, when Satsuma's sankin kôtai mission was combined with a Ryukyuan embassy to Edo.
