Itô Jinsai was a prominent [[Confucianism|Confucian]] scholar of the [[Edo period]]. Though initially a devotee of the [[Zhu Xi]] [[Neo-Confucianism|Neo-Confucianist]] school of thought, he later turned to advocating a greater focus on the original Confucian teachings of [[Confucius]] and [[Mencius]] themselves.
