The Hôheikan was a wooden mansion in the American style built in 1880 in Sapporo in order to house the Meiji Emperor on his visit to Hokkaidô the following year. The structure was also intended to house foreign dignitaries.
It was built by the Hokkaido Development Commission (Kaitakushi), reportedly at a cost of more than 45,000 yen.
