  • Chinese/Japanese: 翰林院 (Hànlín yuàn / kanrin'in)

The Hanlin Academy refers to the scholar-officials in service to the Chinese Imperial court.

The Academy was first established in 738 by Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty,[1] and remained dominant in the Song, Ming, and Qing Dynasties.

Scholars were appointed to the Academy through the Chinese imperial examinations system.
