Cornelia van Nijenroode was the daughter of a [[Dutch East India Company]] (VOC) merchant by a Japanese [[courtesan]], born on [[Dejima]] but raised in Batavia.

Following the death of her first husband, a VOC official, she married Johan Bitter, a lawyer who robbed her of her wealth.
