- Russian navigator Adam von Krusenstern encounters two Japanese/Ainu trading posts on Sakhalin.
- Shiba Kôkan writes his Seiyô gahô ("Laws of Western Pictures").
- Publication begins of a Suikôden adaptation written by Takizawa Bakin and illustrated by Hokusai. This is the first version of the story to be made widely available in Japanese.
