Felice Beato was an Italian photographer who sojourned in Japan in the 1860s to 1880s. A great many of the most famous photos of scenes in Bakumatsu and Meiji period Japan were taken by Beato.
Beato first arrived in Japan in 1863, and published his Photographic Views of Japan five years later. In 1877, he sold his photography business in Japan to the Austrian photographer Baron Raimund von Stillfried-Ratenicz and his German partner Hermann Andersen. He departed Japan for Burma in 1884.
