Nan gusuku was a [[gusuku]] fortress located in what is now [[Nago]] City, in northern [[Okinawa Island]]. An earthworks fortress without stone walls, it stood and operated in some form from roughly 1100 CE to around 1850.

Nan gusuku was a [[gusuku]] fortress located at the foot of Mt. Nago (Nago-dake) in what is now [[Nago]] City, in northern [[Okinawa Island]]. An earthworks fortress without stone walls, it stood and operated in some form, often as the home of the regional lord, Nago ''[[aji]]'', from roughly 1100 CE to around 1850.

 

The grounds of the castle were named a public park in 1963, and remain today a 71.1 hectare [[Okinawa prefecture|prefectural]] public park. The park is particularly known for its [[sakura|cherry blossoms]].
