Emperor Yôzei succeeded his father [[Emperor Seiwa]] in [[876]], at the age of nine, upon Seiwa's retirement. Yôzei's maternal grandfather was [[Fujiwara no Nagara]], but his uncle [[Fujiwara no Mototsune]] served as ''[[sessho|sesshô]]'' (regent) for him.
Yôzei abdicated in favor of a distant relative in [[884]], who then took the throne as [[Emperor Koko|Emperor Kôkô]].
