The Yamato Colony was one of a number of early Japanese(-American) settlements in the United States. Located in Livingston, California, in the San Joaquin Valley, the community was one of three Japanese Christian utopian communities begun by newspaper publisher Abiko KyutarĂ´.

Abiko expressed beliefs that Japanese would be more accepted in the United States if they showed their true intention to settle there, by buying land. Beginning in [[1906]], he divided up his over 3000 acres in the valley into 40-acre parcels, and sold them to Japanese immigrants. In 1918, he began a similar colony in Cressey, CA, and some years later, in Cortez.
