Umekichi Asahina was among the first boatloads of [[Japanese immigration to Hawaii|Japanese immigrants to Hawaii]], arriving in the islands in [[1885]]. He went on to become the first Japanese dentist to operate in the islands, and was active in ''[[kendo|kendô]]'' and ''[[kyudo|kyûdô]]'', founding a ''kendô'' club in the islands in [[1902]].
