Choshu [[Sonno|Sonnô]] [[Joi|Jôi]] extremists were expelled from Kyoto after [[Political change on August 18]]([[1863]]).

[[1864]]/6/5, Some of them who returned to Kyoto were killed or captured by the [[Shinsengumi]] at [[Ikedaya Affair|Ikedaya]].
The incident made Choshu extremists take a military action against [[Satsuma han|Satsuma]] and [[Aizu han|Aizu]].

1864/7, Choshu han [[Karo|Karô]] [[Fukuhara Echigo]], [[Kunishi Shinano]], [[Masuda Uemonnosuke]] took troops to Kyoto. [[Kijima Matabei]], [[Kuzaka Genzui]] and [[Maki Izumi]] were among them.

7/19, The Choshu troops and Satsuma Aizu [[Kuwana han|Kuwana]] troops clashed near Hamaguri gate.
