Funamoto Yaheiji
- Japanese: 船本弥兵次 (Funamoto Yaheiji)
Funamoto Yaheiji was a red seal ship trader, the first Tokugawa envoy to Quang Nam (a polity controlling central-southern Vietnam), and the adopted son of Nguyen Hoang, the lord of that polity.
He was adopted by Nguyen Hoang in 1604; letters were sent to the Tokugawa shogunate in later years announcing the adoption, and requesting that Funamoto be allowed to travel back to Quang Nam with his ship[1]. Shuinjô, the "red seal licenses" issued by the shogunate permitting overseas trade, were generally only valid for one journey, so this sort of request had to be expressed in order to ensure Funamoto's return.
