Exposition Universelle (1900)

The Exposition Universelle opened on April 14, 1900, in Paris. Numerous notable Japanese artists, working both in Nihonga and yôga, as well as in other media, exhibited works at the Fair.

Kuroda Seiki's yôga work "Wisdom, Impression, Sentiment" won a silver prize. Other Japanese artists whose works were exhibited included Ogata Gekkô and Suzuki Shônen. Takeuchi Seihô is also known to have attended.

Theatrical performances by Kawakami Otojirô and his wife, the geisha Sadayakko, were quite popular among Western fairgoers.
