He was working as security guard in Yokohama foreign residencial area. In 1864, he joined Shinsengumi with Ito Kashitaro. In 1867, he left Shinsengumi and joined Goryo Eji. He survived from the Incident at Aburano Koji and later he and other survivers attacked Kondo Isami on the Fushimi street. He fought in the Boshin war under the Satsuma han troops. After Meiji Restoration, he surved for the new government. He died in 1911 as a Christian. He left a memoir "Hata Shigechika Nikki"(秦林親日記).
