Makino Narisada was a lord of Sekiyado han. He brought Nagasaki interpreter Nakano Giken into his service so Nakano could teach him spoken Chinese; through personal connections with Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, Makino and Nakano both participated in Chinese-language salon meetings run by Yoshiyasu and Ogyû Sorai.
