Lady Ban was a consort to Emperor Cheng of China's Han Dynasty (r. 33-7 BCE). She is famous for an incident in which she is said to have refused to ride in an imperial palanquin, insisting that an emperor should be surrounded by his ministers. The episode is depicted in Gu Kaizhi's famous "Admonitions Scroll."
