- 1779/1 Shogunate bans the circulation of nanryôni (pure silver) coinage, beginning the circulation of gold-silver alloyed coins.
- 1779/10 Sakurajima erupts.

- Rangaku scholar Hiraga Gennai is arrested and imprisoned for killing a disciple of his in a fit of rage.
