According to Shinsen Bujutsu Ryusoroku, Momoi founded Kyochi Shinmei-ryû after practicing Toda-ryû, Ittô-ryû, Yagyû-ryû, and Horiuchi-ryû. The Kyochi Shinmei-ryû dojo, Shigakukan, was one of the most popular dojo in Edo during the Bakumatsu period. This school was particularly popular among samurai of Tosa han. Most techniques of the style are now lost, only some kata having been handed down to Kyoshin-ryû and police kenjutsu.(Keishi-ryû)
