Japanese:禁門の変(Kinmon no hen), 蛤御門の変(Hamaguri gomon no hen)
Choshu Sonnô Jôi extremists were expelled from Kyoto after Political change on August 18(1863).
1864/6/5, Some of them who returned to Kyoto were killed or captured by the Shinsengumi at Ikedaya. The incident made Choshu extremists take a military action against Satsuma and Aizu.
1864/7, Choshu han Karô Fukuhara Echigo, Kunishi Shinano, Masuda Uemonnosuke took troops to Kyoto. Kijima Matabei, Kuzaka Genzui and Maki Izumi were among them.
7/19, The Choshu troops and Satsuma Aizu Kuwana troops clashed near Hamaguri gate. Kijima and Kunishi were killed in the battle. Maki and Kuzaka committed Seppuku.
