He joined Shinsengumi in 1863. 1864 , He captured Furutaka Shuntaro which leaded the Ikedaya Affair. Kondo Isami treated him particularly because he was expert of Koshu Ryu Gungaku (Takeda clan's military science). But he was disliked by other members as a flatterer. Later Shinsengumi adopted Western military style and Koshu Ryu Gungaku was no longer needed.
